Honeymelon games aren't “brain training” hand-waving. Each one targets a specific developmental skill, chosen because it is real, measurable, and still growing at the age we build it for. Here is what each game trains, why it matters at that age, and the research it stands on.

Social & emotionalEmotional regulation Ages 9–14

Signals

What it trains

Signals builds two skills that grow together: reading other people — their intentions, feelings and unspoken cues — and staying steady when a moment gets tense. Every choice is answered with feedback that models the reasoning, not just a right-or-wrong mark.

Why it matters at this age

Ages 9–14 are a sensitive window for social cognition: friendships move to the centre of life and the ability to think about what someone else is thinking is still consolidating. Repeated, low-stakes practice at reading people and regulating reactions is the core mechanism behind evidence-based social-emotional learning.

Numeracy Ages 8–14

Number Heist

What it trains

Number Heist builds mental-arithmetic fluency — fast, accurate recall of the four operations across growing magnitudes — and slips in a lateral-thinking riddle between tiers as a change of mental gear. Problems self-level, and a miss always shows the right answer so it teaches rather than blocks.

Why it matters at this age

Ages 8–14 are when arithmetic should become automatic. When number facts come without effort, limited working memory is freed for multi-step and later algebraic reasoning; children who must laboriously compute each fact get bottlenecked downstream. Short, frequent, well-levelled practice with immediate feedback is what builds that automaticity.

Cognitive flexibility Ages 10–18

Switchback

What it trains

Switchback trains cognitive flexibility — the knack of switching between rules, tasks and viewpoints, and finding more than one way to see a problem. Its short switchbacks hit distinct facets: set-shifting under time pressure, generating many varied ideas against a clock, taking another perspective, and spotting the rule in a pattern.

Why it matters at this age

Cognitive flexibility is an executive function that keeps maturing into the late teens, tracking the developing prefrontal cortex. It underpins adaptable problem-solving, bouncing back when a first approach fails, creativity, and transfer to schoolwork. Because it is still plastic at 10–18, brief and varied practice — little and often — is the right dose.

Numeracy Ages 8–13

Denomos

What it trains

Denomos drills the core fraction skills — reading a fraction from a shaded whole, comparing two, finding equivalents, adding same-denominator fractions, and simplifying to lowest terms — one skill per realm, all five mixed for the boss. Problems self-level, and a miss always shows the answer, so it teaches rather than blocks.

Why it matters at this age

Fractions are the hinge between whole-number arithmetic and everything algebraic that follows, and they are where many learners first stumble — often because the pieces (part–whole, equivalence, magnitude) are practised in isolation. Short, varied, feedback-rich practice that ties the symbol to a visual whole builds the magnitude sense that later maths depends on.
